Rock Creek Station SHP is a Pony Express stage and station dating back to its inception in 1857. Today, reconstructed buildings, some on original sites, provide a glimpse of what life was like then. Deep wagon ruts from those early days are still evident, and coupled with the period buildings, make the experience even more realistic. And, during the summer months, reenactors bring Rock Creek fully to life. Though a little out of the way, I definitely recommend a stop here, especially if you are visiting Homestead National Monument, which is just twenty-five miles away. A lovely hike takes you through a nice stand of old-growth woods and out onto a prairie populated with many native plants and flowers. A quiet campsite adjacent to the park completes a perfect visit to the mid-to-late 1800s. Oh, and did I mention that Wild Bill Hickok got his start as a gunfighter here? Well, I just did!
