Craters of the Moon NM protects one of the largest and best-preserved volcanic basalt flows in the world, ranging in age from 15,000 years to just 2000 years. Three lava fields (including features like volcanic cones, tree molds, and lava tubes) and grasslands are maintained by the park service. Several relatively easy hikes allow you to experience many cool volcanic features, the best being Broken Top Loop, Tree Molds, and Caves. If you are so daring, a nice overnight backpacking trip on the Wilderness Trail will really get you into the backcountry — camp at Echo Crater!
