The Battle of Punished Woman’s Fork was the last encounter between Native Americans and United States troops in the state of Kansas. Three hundred and fifty Cheyenne (mostly women and children), under the leadership of Chief Dull Knife and Little Wolf, were attempting to return to their ancestral home in Nebraska and South Dakota after escaping from a reservation near Fort Reno. The Cheyenne slipped away the night after the battle, but most of them were killed by the Army before reaching their long-sought home. Short trails through the canyon and upon the ridge follow the movements of the skirmish that took place on September 27, 1878.
