Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon protects Crater Lake, the remnants of collapsed Mount Mazama, whose eruption just 7,700 years ago created it. Today, the area inspires awe in all who visit it, and photographers flock here, focusing their attention on Wizard and Phantom Islands and deep blue waters (deepest in the U.S.) — and the gorgeous sunsets and sunrises. Driving the Rim Road (thirty-three miles) offers wonderful views of an often-changing landscape at over thirty overlooks. Camping, stargazing, and hiking (over ninety miles of trails) are popular activities here, and a visit wouldn’t be complete without a boat or trolley tour.
