Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain carving under construction in the Black Hills of South Dakota, not far from Mount Rushmore. This memorial commemorates the Oglala Lakota chief Crazy Horse, and when finished will depict him riding a horse while pointing dramatically into the distance. Because it is a privately funded operation, construction, which began in 1948, has moved slowly and even today looks to be many years from completion. Ultimately, it will dwarf Mount Rushmore in size — and I certainly hope to see it that way before I am finished!
