Fort Buford was constructed near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers in 1866. This military fort was part of a significant supply chain for operations west of the Mississippi. Because Lewis and Clark camped very near this site back in 1805, many items around the fort commemorated that “visit.” Notably, Hunkpapa Sioux leader Sitting Bull surrendered here in 1881 after a lengthy winter siege of the fort. My father-in-law Richard and I stopped here during our Lewis and Clark adventure in 2009. For more on Lewis and Clark, please read my journal from that trip, “Lewis & Clark & Seifried & Shafer” under the Naturelated tab.
