Images from Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Pennsylvania

My wife and I have visited Fort Necessity NB a handful of times over the years and have been impressed the the park service’s efforts at preserving the site. A newish interpretative center and improvements to the battlefield and fort make this a must stop if you are travelling through western Pennsylvania (I visit almost every time I head toward Washington, D.C.). The specs about the fort are contained within the photographs below.

Fort Necessity, where Colonial troops commanded by twenty-two year old Colonel George Washington were defeated in the opening battle of the French and Indian War
A skirmish in late-May 1754 (that resulted in thirteen dead Frenchmen) prompted Washington and his Colonials to build a small fortification in expectation of a larger French force
The inside of Fort Necessity, where 400 British soldiers retreated from 700 French and Indian troops. After a day of battle and numerous casualties, Washington surrendered, though the British were allowed to withdraw with the honors of war (and their guns). The French promptly burned the fort.
It is a beautiful site for a fort — aesthetically!
