The Badlands is one of my very favorite places. It features the badlands themselves, a geologic term for soft sedimentary rock that erodes easily. The Badlands are losing approximately an inch a year, which is a very large number geologically. It is also home to perhaps the largest collection of Oligocene fossil remains in the Americas, which include ancestors of camels, three-toed horses, antelope-like animals, rhinoceroses, deer-like mammals, rabbits, beavers, turtles, and birds. Hiking, camping, biking, and general sightseeing are the typical Badland activities. I have experienced some of the best thunderstorms ever here — if you, like me, love such things!
