The Canaan Valley encompasses a large area, from Blackwater Falls State Park to the north down through Canaan Valley Resort to Dolly Sods Wilderness in the south. Lots of great hikes in all three locales, and lots of scenic areas — including the Allegheny Mountains, the Monongahela National Forest, and many waterfalls. For those of you who are dandies, I recommend Canaan Valley Resort as a base of operations. For the intrepid, I encourage you to camp anywhere along the Dolly Sods Wilderness Trail. Dolly Sods is a distinctive high-altitude plateau (averaging around 4,000 feet) that features bogs (ripe with wild cranberries and blueberries), wind-stunted trees, and beautiful vistas. It is a landscape more reminiscent of the northern Rocky Mountain region — but right here in eastern North America!
