In the fall of 2018, my wife and I visited western Pennsylvania for a long weekend birthday trip (Jane’s). We have traveled to this area a few times over the years, but on this excursion we added the Flight 93 Memorial to our itinerary. I’m not sure what I expected, but because the National Park Service is involved, I knew it would be worthwhile — and it certainly is. Of course, the memorial protects and commemorates the site of United flight 93’s crash on September 11, 2001, the last of four commercial planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists, this one targeting the United States Capitol or the White House in Washington, D.C. Brave passengers fought their way into the cockpit, but the hijackers rolled the plane and it crashed on this site. The visitor center is impressive and powerful, and walking the grounds provides time for quiet reflection about what transpired here on that day. If you want to read about my experience teaching that day, please read “My 9/11” under the My Writings tab.
