Grand Teton NP protects the most impressive mountain range in the United States. Many people staying at Yellowstone NP drop down here just to look at them and visit Jackson Lake Lodge. But people doing that are missing out on so much that the park has to offer. It is a hiker’s paradise, offering easy trails along the valley (Hermitage Point, Valley, Jenny Lake) and strenuous challenges up into the mountains themselves (Inspiration Point, Paintbrush Canyon, Garnet Canyon). Numerous lakes provide a variety of water opportunities, from kayaking and canoeing to 10 horsepower motor-boating. Float trips are also available on the Snake River (three times so far!) — which provide spectacular views and access to lots of wildlife. All of the campgrounds are awesome (for their various reasons), but my two favorites are Colter Bay and Jenny Lake. Lots of animals populate the park, so it’s not unusual to see moose, black bears, grizzlies, eagles, and American pelicans. I trip from here down to the town of Jackson is a must as well. Belly up to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar (saddle stools!) and have dinner at a multitude of fine restaurants, including my favorite Mexican joint, The Merry Piglets, where I had beers with Harrison Ford some years ago.
