Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawai’i protects the active volcanoes Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. Although most people stay close the roads (Crater Rim and Chain of Craters), many short hikes (Ka’u Desert, Thurston Lava Tube, Devastation, and Crater Rim) offer close-up views of what active lava can do. For a fun, exhilarating evening, drive to the end of the Chain of Craters Trail at sunset to witness the lava flow entering the sea!
