Located outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, Monticello was the primary residence of President Thomas Jefferson — who designed the home seeking to create a uniquely American style of architecture. Built between 1768 and 1770, Monticello remained an important retreat for Jefferson until his death in 1826. Today, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation operates and maintains the site, and visitors can view the home and grounds — as well as Jefferson’s burial site.
