Canyonlands is a back-country playground for canyoneers, four-wheelers, backpackers, and mountain bikers. I even face-planted a Jeep Wrangler rental here back in the early 2000s (see “Yep, I’m Jeep People” under the Naturelated tab for a humorous — albeit expensive — story). I definitely need to spend more time here and I have more pictures than these — they just happen to be on slide film which I haven’t converted to digital yet. But a quick stop at Newspaper Rock just inside the border of the park boundary back in 2018 provided what you see here. This rock panel features one of the very largest collections of petroglyphs anywhere in the world. Some of the carvings date back 2000 years and were left by numerous cultures, including the Anasazi, Fremont, Navajo, and Pueblo.
