Any trip west through South Dakota necessitates a stop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Every year since 1892, this multi-purpose arena has been decorated with corn (and the plant) to honor something or someone, including animals, WWII, Native Americans, the nation’s bicentennial, and in 2016, rock music. I have made this pilgrimage (really, it’s only three miles from the interstate) at least a half a dozen times and have never been disappointed.
