Stephen Hawking’s recent passing got me thinking about some of his statements concerning religion and God. Not unexpectedly for a man of science (and in particular quantum physics), he believed that there is no afterlife, that heaven is a “fairy story” for people who fear death — something he apparently did not fear. However, he did claim that one imponderable question had always haunted him: why does the universe exist? Not how it was created nor what created it, but why. In so many ways, isn’t that the most interesting question of all?? Leave it to the genius of Stephen Hawking.
