Teddy Roosevelt is a really cool national park. Here the park service protects badlands, grasslands, the Missouri River valley, and lots of animals — bison, feral horses, elk, bighorn sheep, coyotes, mountain lions, deer, badgers, and of course, prairie dogs. Oh, and they are also preserving Teddy Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch in the remote North Unit of the park. My favorite short hikes include Wind Canyon and Buck Hill in the South Unit and Caprock Coulee in the North Unit. Backpackers and horseback riders love the Achenbach Trail in the North Unit where you will experience a couple of river crossings, lots of buttes, and hopefully many animals (best chances to see the horses, elk, coyotes, and mountain lions). Bicyclers also enjoy riding the roads at both units because this park is not a high volume one — just another great reason to visit!
